Friends Housing, Inc. is committed to the creation and development of safe, stable, and affordable housing opportunities for individuals diagnosed with a developmental disability residing in South Los Angeles. Our intent is to bring together best practices in housing development and to identify a supportive network of professionals who are actively engaged in fulfilling the housing needs of developmentally disabled consumers.

Friends Housing personnel have developed various partnerships with organizations and developers such as Home Ownership Made Easy (HOME), Los Angeles Neighborhood Housing Services (LANHS), ABODE Communities formerly Los Angeles Community Design Center (LACDC) and LINC Housing. These partnerships have created invaluable housing opportunities for South Central L.A. Regional Center’s consumers and their families.

HOME is a 501(C)(3) Housing Corporation founded by a group of individuals who wanted to develop alternative housing options for adults with developmental disabilities. The group worked tirelessly with Friends Housing liaison personnel to purchase an apartment building in 2001. Today, this relationship continues to provide affordable housing options to 14 South Central Los Angeles Regional Center consumers.

LANHS and Friends Housing liaison personnel teamed up in 2002 to educate persons with developmental disabilities and their families on the home buying process. Through a $100,000 grant funded by the Department of Developmental Services (DDS) the two groups sponsored home buying fairs that focused on:

  • How to read a credit report
  • Understanding down-payment requirements
  • Down-payment assistance programs
  • What is an insurance and title report
  • How to select and work with a real estate agent

Working with the ABODE Communities, Friends Housing liaison personnel was instrumental in placing 10 South Central L.A. Regional Center seniors at Morgan Place, a 55 unit senior development (age 55 and over) in South Los Angeles (73rd and Crenshaw). Ten units have been designated for SCLARC consumers. The units offered to seniors facilitate independent living for singles and couples. Services are coordinated with the Abode Communities are Residents Services staff, Friends Housing and SCLARC vendors. The project has been occupied since December 2008.

Similarly, LINC Housing Corporation is working with Friends Housing liaison personnel to develop an 84 unit supportive housing complex called SEASONS at Compton. The special needs target population for this project consists of SCLARC consumers, 55-years-old and up. Thirty-two units at SEASONS will be set aside for SCLARC seniors.
